St. Clair Health Partners with Seer Medical to Deliver At-Home Diagnostic Monitoring for Neurology Patients

St. Clair is the third health system in the nation to offer the innovative healthcare solution

PITTSBURGH, PA (JULY 11, 2024) – St. Clair Health patients with epilepsy and related conditions can now complete continuous diagnostic testing from the comfort and convenience of their own homes. A long-term hospital stay used to be the only way to conduct video electroencephalogram (EEG) testing, but St. Clair Health now provides personalized care that meets patient needs, where they are most comfortable, thanks to a partnership with Seer Medical.

Maria Abraham, MBA, MPAS, PA-C, Director of Neuroscience at St. Clair Health, first learned of Seer after their participation in Mayo Clinic Platform_Accelerate, a 30-week program that helps early-stage health tech AI start-up companies get market ready by providing access to high quality Mayo Clinic de-identified data and industry-leading experts. St. Clair Health is member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a select group of independent health care providers, carefully vetted by Mayo Clinic and granted special access to Mayo's clinical, educational, research and operational knowledge, expertise, and resources.

Thorough in-home testing can offer diagnostic and economic advantages to inpatient monitoring, and while some patients may still require inpatient monitoring, most can be tested at home. Abraham, who has been working on the Seer initiative for over one year, is thrilled to bring this world-class, at-home diagnostic technology to the region. The Seer Home service enables up to seven-day monitoring durations and high rates of seizure capture to uncover more data to support diagnoses and treatments. The wearable technology can be self-disconnected and reconnected so patients can shower during studies, has a 10-day battery to ensure continuous data streaming, and only requires an in-person visit for connection. The Seer Medical team conducts data checks and patient support entirely remotely throughout studies, as well as arranges for equipment collection from the patient’s home at the conclusion of studies.

“Prolonged video EEG recording was previously only available in inpatient-based epilepsy monitoring units (EMU). The Seer Home service provides the same quality analysis as the EMU in the comfort of your own home,” explains Maxim Hammer, MD, Chief of Neurology at St. Clair Health. “The duration of the study increases sensitivity to detect epilepsy, while video recording allows for correlation between clinical symptoms and the EEG to determine what a seizure looks like for patients.

Kellie L. Kioalicas, Lead EEG Technologist at St. Clair Health, has fitted a number of patients with the state-of-the-art monitoring system since introducing the Seer Home service in May 2024. She and the rest of the team are committed to performing multiple studies per week, as they anticipate the Seer Home service will play a significant role in the diagnostic process moving forward. Kioalicas shares, “It integrates seamlessly with our clinical processes, enhancing our diagnostic capabilities while offering real-time data that is crucial for patient management.”

This shift from hospital-based testing to a more comfortable, patient-centered experience at home is a win-win scenario for everyone. Patients can now go about their daily activities as usual during studies thanks to the innovative and comfortable monitoring technology. The data collected during studies enables the St. Clair Health team to better understand and respond to the unique needs of patients, enabling timely interventions and personalized care plans.
