Why did you choose your specialty? I liked the diversity of the specialty. We take care of the entire spectrum of life, from infants to the elderly. I enjoy the challenges of surgery, and the fact that no day in the operating room is the same. I truly feel privileged to do this for a living.

What symptoms do patients ignore most? Lumps in the neck in any adult are never something to ignore.

What question do patients most often ask? Why do I clear my throat so much.

What advice do you wish patients would take seriously? That antibiotics are not always the solution, and that they can actually hurt you.

Tell us about your most compelling case? Any of my head and neck cancer patients are compelling, because of their toughness and desire to live. What innovation has changed treatment in your specialty? The increase in the incidence of HPV or human papilloma virus associated head and neck cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, in some circumstances, is now a sexually transmitted cancer.

What is the biggest myth you deal with and what is the truth? That Q-tips get rid of ear wax! They only push the wax in further.
