Coffee Break with Judy's Java Joint

By Lois Thomson

Are you one of those folks who can't start the day without a steaming cup of coffee?  If so, join more than a billion of your neighbors in countries across the globe, because – next to water – coffee is the world's most popular drink.

A 2020 study by the National Coffee Association showed that 64 percent of Americans over the age of 18 drink coffee every day, the highest rate since 2012.  But while the United States may have a coffee shop on every corner, especially in metropolitan cities, its annual consumption is about 9.7 lbs. per person – approximately three cups of coffee per day – making it only the 25th-largest consumer of coffee worldwide on an individual basis.

Leading the way in coffee consumption is Finland, with an average of 26 lbs. per person.  Rounding out the top 10 are Norway, Iceland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Canada.

Interesting tidbits about some of those countries and their love affair with coffee include:  The average Finn drinks nearly four cups a day, and coffee is so popular that two, 10-minute coffee breaks are officially authorized for Finnish workers.  Beer was not legal in Iceland until 1987, and because wine is expensive, coffee is considered to be the most important social drink in the country.  The Dutch first introduced coffee to the West, shipping entire coffee plants from Yemen to India and Indonesia, where they were grown on plantations to supply beans to Europe.

Despite being one of the world's smallest countries, Luxembourg has thousands of coffee houses, ranging from small, stand-up coffee bars, to elegant establishments with linen tablecloths.  Canada, consuming an average of 14 lbs. of coffee per person, is the only country in the top 10 that is not in Europe.  Canada actually generated one of the world's first coffee chains, Tim Horton's, which makes three out of every four cups of coffee sold in the country.

So if you can't imagine starting your day without a cup of coffee, know that many others around the world are joining you.
