Ohio Valley Hospital Helps YMCA After-School and Summer Camp Programs Focus On Healthy Habits

As students head back to school this fall, parents want to make sure their kids not only do well in classes like Math and English, but that they’re getting an “A” in healthy habits too! Ohio Valley Hospital and the Western Area YMCA have teamed up to make sure their community will excel in that particular subject.

Ohio Valley Hospital has generously agreed to be an underwriter for a portion of the Western PA YMCA’s after-school and summer camp programs. With a donation of $7,500, Ohio Valley Hospital will be funding both programs’ Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) component.

The YMCA-run after-school programs benefit kids who are in Kindergarten through 5th grade, in the Brentwood, Montour, and West Allegheny districts, including Montour Elementary, McKee, and Wilson schools. The after-school programs run from the end of the school day at the elementary schools through 6:00pm. They feature activities and elements that promote youth development and healthy living, which is why Ohio Valley Hospital was eager to partner with the YMCA on the project.  For parents who may not be able to afford the cost of this after-school program, financial assistance is available.

As part of HEPA, the program’s schedule includes 30 minutes or more of physical activity and healthy snacks, including whole grains and fruit. This year, Ohio Valley Hospital will be sending qualified speakers in the medical field to talk with students about making healthy lifestyle choices.

The Western Area YMCA provides summer day camp programming to 250+ children each summer.  As part of the summer day camp program, the children are taught about the importance of good nutrition and the benefits of growing your own vegetables and herbs.  The summer camp children plant a garden at the beginning of the program, and throughout the summer they learn healthy recipes, some of which come from Ohio Valley Hospital’s dietitian, and make the dishes from the produce grown in our garden.
