Keeping Children Moving Throughout the Summer!

Keeping children physically active can be challenging. Children spend much of their time inside playing on computers, TV or other electronic devices. As a result, childhood obesity affects about 1 out of every 5 children in the United States. Causes for childhood obesity are very widespread. Some of the major contributors include children’s environment, socioeconomic status, lack of physical activity, poor dietary habits and genetics/hereditary.

It is recommended that children between the ages of 5-12 years of age need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Regular physical activity can help children better maintain a healthy weight, maintain regular energy levels, learn new skills, build new friendships and improve flexibility and posture. Being physically active can also help kids feel more confident and involved. What exactly is moderate to vigorous physical activity? This can include activities such as walking fast/jogging/running, bike riding, swimming, chasing friends, participating in organized sports, skipping or dancing.

Here at the Wilfred R Cameron Wellness Center, we offer a summer Kids Camp for children entering first grade through children entering 8th grade from June 10th – August 16th where our goal is to keep children physically and mentally active. Children will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports, try out new classes such as yoga, archery and martial arts, meet new friends, experience indoor and outdoor play, enjoy daily art activities, try and help prepare new foods and so much more! There are a variety of registration options including scholarships for families in need: 10-week full day, 10-week half days, weekly drop ins or daily drop-ins. Full day camp is offered Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm with before camp care available 7:00 am – 9:00 am. Half day camp is offered 9:00 am – 1:00 pm or 1:00-5:00 pm Monday – Friday.
