South Hills Orthopaedic Surgery Associates: On the Move to a New Location
By Nancy Kennedy

At South Hills Orthopaedic Surgery Associates, mobility is everything. The highly credentialed surgeons who form this exemplary practice are committed to restoring their patients to the highest possible levels of movement, whether they are recovering from joint replacement surgery, healing from a fracture or sports-related sprain, or learning to manage the challenges of osteoarthritis. The ability to move freely and comfortably has an enormous impact on quality of life, and it is widely recognized that activity plays a major role in general health, helping to prevent conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. As the medical specialists who diagnose and treat injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints and muscles) that gives movement to the human body, orthopaedic surgeons are experts in mobility.
In early summer, South Hills Orthopaedic Surgical Associates (SHOSA) will be exercising some mobility of its own, when the practice moves to a splendid new setting that will match the excellence of the care they provide. Practice Administrator Pat Evans, MBA, MHA, says that the practice will re-locate from its Vanadium Road office to a new one in the heart of the South Hills, on Oxford Drive in Bethel Park, directly across from South Hills Village. The new space will expand SHOSA’s capabilities to diagnose and treat patients while providing an environment that is bright, spacious and accommodating to the needs of patients as well as staff.
“We recognize that our patients are often injured or in pain when they are coming to us,” Evans explains. “We designed our new location to be easily accessible, to make the patient’s experience as easy and pleasant as possible. There is ample parking with spaces reserved for patients; no steps at the building entrance; and our offices are situated right off the elevator so there are no long distances to walk. Our proximity to the shopping center will give patients the convenience of bundling their errands with their doctor’s appointment.”
The new location features a calm, comfortable ambience that presents a strong contrast to the cramped, windowless space that served as SHOSA’s primary office location for 27 years. There is a large waiting area with Wi-Fi and coffee service; there are two check-out areas, to streamline the discharge process and move patients through efficiently. Plenty of large windows bring natural light into the space and a waterfall flows soothingly over glass panes in a design intended to promote relaxation. Architect IKM gave the environment an organic, spa-like feel, says Evans, which is therapeutic for patients, visitors, vendors and staff.
“We believe that this environment will provide us with a more positive work experience,” she says. “Our physicians are very happy with it.”
The move to a new, more spacious location reflects the significant growth that SHOSA has been experiencing of late. Last August, Dr. Brett Perricelli joined Drs. Eric Nabors, Derrick Fluhme, Damon Combs and Christopher Manning in the group. Musculoskeletal conditions are the number one reason that patients visit the doctor, according to the American Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons. With Americans living longer, more people are developing osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, and the demand for orthopaedic surgeons is growing rapidly. SHOSA provides state-of-the-art care for patients of all ages and in all areas of orthopaedics, including total joint replacement; arthroscopic surgery; surgery of the hand, foot and ankle; surgery of the spine; and sports medicine. Treatment may include medications, application of casts and splints, exercise, physical therapy or surgery. The doctors present various treatment options to patients to help them decide on the best plan of care for their specific individual needs. Established in 1979, South Hills Orthopaedic Surgery Associates have more than 50 years of combined experience in delivering the most advanced, high-quality orthopaedic care. “Our physicians are highly qualified, and all are fellowship-trained, which is exceptional,” says Evans, who has been with SHOSA for 11 years. “We are the busiest orthopaedic group at St. Clair Hospital. In addition to the doctors, we have a nurse practitioner and two physicians assistants; three medical assistants; three x-ray technicians; four front desk staff; two appointment schedulers and one surgery scheduler; three billing staff and one disability specialist.”
Clearly, SHOSA is a dynamic, busy practice, and Pat Evans wouldn’t have it any other way. She loves her job with SHOSA so much that she makes a daily 160-mile commute from her home in Sharon. “I don’t mind the driving distance because I believe so strongly in the people of South Hills Orthopaedic Associates and in the quality of our care. My colleagues are caring individuals, committed to providing our patients with the most advanced care, in a manner that is respectful and compassionate.”
